Chapter 2: What I wish My Teachers knew
Many times, students with food allergies don't want to admit what they need or want from their teachers to help them succeed. Here are some of the things that food allergic teens from around the country would like their teachers to know.
"I wish you knew how much it hurts me when you reward the class with food I can't eat. It makes me feel left out that I can't participate in the fun."
"I wish my teachers knew how to use an epinephrine auto-injector. It would make me feel like they cared."
"I wish my teachers knew that it embarrasses me when they tell kids that they can't eat in class because of me, when the real reason is because the school has a mice issue."
"I wish my teacher knew that when he jokes about my allergies, he makes it seem ok for other kids to joke about my allergies, even though food allergies are not a joke."
"I wish my teachers knew how much I hate when they make me sit at the peanut free table. It really feels more like the peanut freak table."
"I wish my teacher knew that I don't miss days of school when we cook for the hungry because I am a bad person, I am a good person just trying to stay safe."
"I wish my teachers knew that they have helped me though a lot and I know without their support, I wouldn't be here today."
"I wish my teachers knew that food allergies are draining and that when I come to class looking uninterested, it is actually because I am exhausted."
"I wish my teachers knew that even though I may need a few extra considerations, I do not want to be treated differently than my peers."
"I wish my teachers knew that I look at them as heroes for helping keep me safe every day."
